Dentons HPRP was invited to participate in the 2018 Inter-Pacific Bar Association Conference in Manila, Philippines (16/3). Hendra Ong, a partner in Dentons HPRP, took part as one of the speakers in a panel discussion, delivering the topic of Investing in ASEAN’s emerging markets and Latin America.
In the session, the panelists discussed ASEAN’s emerging and developing markets including Myanmar, Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam, and Latin America, in the search for new challenges and opportunities. They also explored legal pitfalls which should be considered when making investments in ASEAN’s emerging and developing markets and Latin America and provided possible legal solutions. The panel highlighted foreign ownership restrictions, the risks of various structures designed to avoid foreign ownership restrictions, requirements in hiring local manpower, anti-corruption regulations, choice of language for contracts, dispute resolution strategies and other relevant issues.
The Inter-Pacific Bar Association (“IPBA”) is an international association of business and commercial lawyers who live in, or have a strong interest in, the Asia-Pacific Region. It was established in April 1991 at an organizing conference held in Tokyo attended by more than 500 lawyers from countries within the Asia-Pacific region.
