Dentons HPRP partner Hendra Ong was featured in an article ‘A Meandering Path’ discussing the energy sector in Indonesia, in Asian Legal Business (ALB) Thomson Reuters. The article was first published in the ALB November 2017 issue.
Understanding that Indonesia has ambitious targets to increase the utilization of renewable energy, the ALB editor explores the recent development in energy sector in Indonesia. While the government has passed various regulations on the energy sector, lawyers working in the sector see a great deal of client interest and much potential for the future.
In the article, Hendra’s was quoted as saying, “Indonesia has great potential in terms of renewable energy resources, and this should attract more investors to get into this sector.” However, he also shared his concerned that the rapid changes in regulations reflects the instability of the regulatory framework causing uncertainty in the implementation of power projects using renewable energy.
In spite of this situation, the editor reported that law firms are today receiving many queries about how to invest in renewable energy in Indonesia, what the challenges are, and how to structure the business model, from both legal and tax perspectives.
